Meta’s social media platform, Threads, is reportedly planning to roll out a feature similar to Twitter’s Direct Messages (DMs), allowing users to send private messages within the app. While Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri had previously stated that Threads wouldn’t include this feature in the near future, a leaked internal memo obtained by Business Insider suggests that DMs will be “coming soon” to the platform.
The memo also mentioned potential new features for Threads, with social media analyst Matt Navarra confirming the leak by sharing part of the document on Twitter. However, an official release date for these updates has yet to be revealed.
The addition of DMs to Threads would allow users to have private conversations, particularly for discussing sensitive topics that they prefer not to share publicly. Currently, users have to rely on other apps for these private exchanges, but there appears to be a reluctance to use Meta’s other services like Messenger or Instagram for this purpose.
In a recent update on Threads, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared his vision for the platform’s growth. He expressed optimism about the strong community forming on Threads, noting that although the platform is still in its early stages, its initial growth has exceeded expectations. With millions of daily active users, Zuckerberg sees a positive trend for Threads.
He emphasized that the next critical step for Threads is to maintain daily engagement from users, stressing the importance of enhancing the app’s core features and retaining users. Once these foundations are set, Meta will focus on expanding the Threads community.
The Threads app is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, where users can share posts up to 500 characters, including links, images, and videos as long as five minutes.
