When uBlock Origin Stops Working on Chrome Soon, You’ll Have Two Alternatives

Despite being one of the most widely used ad-blocking extensions, Google is planning to disable uBlock Origin on Chrome. However, there are still some potential workarounds.

uBlock Origin, known for its robust privacy and security features, has been an essential tool for millions of Chrome users by blocking ads, cookies, and annoying overlays. It has long been available on multiple browsers, but now, the extension faces an uncertain future on Chrome. According to a notice on the Chrome Web Store, it will soon be unsupported due to its failure to adhere to Chrome’s “best practices for extensions.”

The core reason behind this is Google’s decision to phase out support for Manifest V2 extensions, a category that includes uBlock Origin, which has amassed over 40 million downloads.

Google plans to transition to the Manifest V3 framework, which will still allow ad blockers, but they must comply with new guidelines. However, this shift leaves popular extensions like uBlock Origin with a ticking clock.

Fortunately, there are a few potential workarounds. uBlock Origin will continue to work on non-Chromium browsers like Firefox, which isn’t impacted by the transition to Manifest V3. Additionally, users can opt for a lite version of uBlock Origin that complies with V3, though it’s a stripped-down version with reduced functionality, particularly in dealing with sites that use anti-adblocker tactics.

Another silver lining is the formation of the WebExtensions Community Group, dedicated to setting standards for browser extensions. This initiative aims to create a more consistent and open environment for developers of extensions across different browsers.

However, uBlock Origin’s developer, Raymond Hill, has stated that the Chrome Web Store will not transition uBlock Origin to the Lite version. He mentioned that the Lite version is significantly different from the full version and may not meet the needs of users who rely on its full capabilities.

If you depend on uBlock Origin and want to continue using it, you have two main choices:

  1. Switch to a different browser.
  2. Switch to another ad blocker that complies with Manifest V3, like AdGuard or AdBlock.

If you’re considering switching browsers, alternatives like Arc or Opera may be good options. However, any Chromium-based browser might eventually face the same issue, leaving you with only one clear choice: non-Chromium browsers like Firefox, Safari, Pale Moon, or LibreWolf, which aren’t affected by the Manifest V2 phase-out.
